Canada travel to Costa Rica on the home stretch of World Cup qualifying action in 2022 knowing that a win would secure their first World Cup berth since 1986.

John Herdman’s unbeaten side heads into the final round of CONCACAF qualifying fixtures at the top of the standings with an impressive return of 25 points from 11 games.

Anything less than a win in San Jose will delay their confirmation until Sunday’s home game against Jamaica in Toronto.

However, hosts Costa Rica find themselves in a complicated qualifying situation, with 16 points on the board, just one point outside the intercontinental playoff spot, with an expectant full house at the Estadio Nacional hoping to keep their hopes alive.

83rd min.: Two more attempts by 10-man Canada. First it was Richie Laryea and then the follow-up by Hoilett. But goalkeeper Keylor Navas comes through on the first and a defender blocks the second. The Ticos are holding firmly to this lead.

80th min.: SUBS – Canada bring on two subs as Ugbo and Kone come in for Osorio and Larin. Canada are more likely to get the equalizer at this point than Costa Rica getting a second.

73rd min.: Big save Keylor Navas and then Canada hits the crossbar on the follow-up. Costa Rica escape there.

70th min.: SUBS — Costa Rica made two changes at halftime and quickly made the rest of its three subs inside the first 25 minutes of the second half. Meanwhile, Junior Hoilett comes on for Alistair Johnston for Canada.

63rd min.: Atiba Hutchinson is playing the Steven Vitoria role tonight in central defense, but he’s had a few struggles and he gifted Costa Rica a corner, but Costa rica let him off the hook.

56th min.: The initiative to make the game is now firmly in the hands of 10-man Canada. Costa Rica wants to make the one goal hold up and the Ticos are defending first.

53rd min.: What a chance for Costa Rica! Long ball from Ronald Matarrita for forward teammate Joel Campbell and he was in alone on goal, but Campbell’s shot was stopped and the danger was averted by Canada.

46th min.: The second half is underway and both teams will be buoyed by Panama being held 1-1 at home. That’s a big result for both sides. A draw for Canada would be enough to go through.

47th min.: Costa Rica score! A cross by Gerson Torres finds the head of Celso Borges and nods it home and the stadium explodes. Costa Rica has taken the lead just before the break.

37th min.: Great chance for 10-man Canada as the ball falls to the foot of Cyle Larin in the box, but he can’t get it on goal and the Ticos clear.

34th min.: YELLOW — And it’s Mark-Anthony Kaye getting a second yellow. Canada are down to 10 men.

31st min.: Well-crafted attack by Canada and they get a few shots off, but they were blocked. Richie Laryea is playing wide left

24th min.: While news begins to spread about Honduras equalizing in Panama — both teams are watching Panama carefully – Canada gets a corner kick, but nothing comes of it.

19th min.: No red card for Canada’s Mark-Anthony Kaye. The replays show Kaye leading with his studs and making contact. But after checking it on the monitor, the referee opted for no red.

16th min.: YELLOW – Mark-Anthony Kaye gets a yellow card for a hard foul on Ronald Matarrita and there’s a Video Review of the incident taking place. The fans are exhorting the referee Said Martinez to show red.

10th min.: After an early flurry of activity, Canada have settled down. Two more corners conceded to the Ticos, however, and Francisco Calvo gets another header. But again, it’s off target.

2nd min.: We’re off and, as expected, the Costa Ricans come out on fire. The locals taken early corner kick that’s headed over the bar.
